9 Bad Morning Habits That Can Ruin Your Day

Let’s face it, trying to get your morning routine together can sometimes be a challenge. Some of us have bad morning habits that leave us feeling tired, moody, and unmotivated.

Hitting the Snooze Button

While it can be tempting to hit that snooze button, it’s best that you wake up when your alarm goes off. You may think that you’re getting more rest when you hit snooze, but in reality, hitting the snooze button can make you feel even more groggy and tired.

If you need a little assistance with avoiding the snooze button, one piece of advice I heard years ago is to put your alarm clock on the other side of the room. That way, when your alarm goes off, you’ll have to actually stand up and walk in order to turn it off.

Checking Your Emails

One of the biggest morning distractions for some people is checking their email when they first wake up. If you’re anything like me, you probably find yourself getting sucked into looking at your inbox multiple times throughout the day (and sometimes late at night).

Checking your email first thing in the morning can add stress to your day before it even begins. Make it a rule that you won’t check your email until a certain time in the morning.

If nothing else, at least make it a rule that you won’t check your email while you’re still in bed in the morning.

Skipping Breakfast

If you don’t eat breakfast, then you’re depriving your body of the energy that it needs to continue throughout the day. Without breakfast, you’re more likely to overeat or snack on less healthy foods during the day.

Set yourself up for success by planning your breakfast in advance. I’ll go into this more when I share the next bad habit, which is eating processed food for breakfast.

Eating Processed Foods for Breakfast

Fast food restaurants like McDonald’s have become somewhat of a morning ritual for many people. While fast food is a convenient option, it’s not necessarily a healthy option.

There’s a good chance that the item you’re ordering off the menu is loaded with unhealthy fats, sugars, and more. Starting off your day with overly processed foods can leave you feeling bloated, and tired. Trust me, that’s not how you want to start your day feeling.

Not Stretching in the Morning

After I began doing yoga a few years ago, I discovered the importance of stretching in the morning. Don’t worry, you don’t have to start your day with a 45 minute yoga routine.

Doing a simple 10 minute stretch every morning can ease muscle tension, reduce body pains, and improve your mood.

Not Having a Positive Mindset

Start your day with a positive mindset. How we start our mornings often determines how the rest of our day will go. If you start your day thinking negative thoughts, there’s a good chance that those thoughts will have an effect on the rest of your day. By taking some time to think about your goals, what you’re grateful for, and other similar activities, you can go into your day feeling positive and hopeful.

Not Drinking Water

We hear all the time that we need to drink more water. Unfortunately, many of us aren’t drinking as much water as we should.

Drinking water in the morning and throughout the day can increase your energy levels, help relieve headaches, improve focus, and decrease stress levels. If you have a hard time drinking water in the morning, try drinking a nice herbal tea instead.

Checking Your Phone

According to Tech Times, 46% of Americans check their phones before getting out of bed in the morning. I’m willing to bet that a large percentage of these people are checking their social media accounts to be specific.

As someone who has quit social media, I recommend avoiding all social media when you first wake up.

The main reason being that looking at someone else’s life when you first wake up can change the tone of how you feel about yourself and your life in general before you’ve even gotten out of bed.

Instead of checking your phone, you can use this time to do your bed stretches, journal, or tell yourself positive affirmations.

I try not to look at my phone at all when I first wake up. I don’t use an alarm clock to wake up in the morning, so what I’ll do is leave my phone in another room at night. That way, when I wake up, I can’t immediately grab my phone. Not checking my phone when I first wake up has improved my mornings drastically.

Not Getting Enough Sleep

If you plan on getting your day off to a good start, it’s important that you get enough sleep the night before. Not getting enough sleep can leave you feeling groggy, forgetful, more prone to accidents, and can negatively impact your performance at work.

To be the best version of yourself that you can be, make sure you’re getting at least 7-8 hours of sleep every night.

Use your mornings to set yourself up for success. Eliminating bad habits can be tough, but it’s worth it if it means having better days.

By streamlining and focusing on what matters most, you’ll find yourself feeling less frazzled, more motivated, and ready to take on your day.
