How to Make Money Online Selling Bookmarks

I earn commissions for purchases made through links in this post.

So you want to make money online selling bookmarks? I’m here to let you know that it’s totally possible to make a side income selling bookmarks.

Perhaps you’ve seen artists selling their cute bookmarks on Etsy or Instagram and you’re wondering how you can do the same thing?

Well, it’s surprisingly simple to get started.

Even with the popularity of ebooks, there are plenty of readers out there that prefer to read physical books.

That means there’s definitely a market out there of people looking for unique bookmarks.

Important Note! I won’t be covering the legalities of starting your business; however, you’ll definitely want to make sure you have a Terms and Conditions for your business. I highly recommend The Contract Shop for attorney-approved Terms and Conditions. This is one of the BEST ways to protect your business!

1. Determine Your Target Market

Before you create you first bookmark, decide who your target market will be. Will you create bookmarks for children, young adults (YA), or adult readers?

Additionally, consider breaking this down a bit further and deciding which genre you’ll create bookmarks for. I’ve found that when you create bookmarks for a very specific group of people, your chances of making sales increase.

For example, you could create bookmarks for young adult readers in the fantasy genre. An example of a shop that does this really well is Jessica Jade Designs on Etsy.

Jessica creates and sells bookmarks for YA fans of popular series like the Throne of Glass series, Crescent City, and more.

2. Purchase Your Supplies

The good thing about having a bookmark business is that you don’t need a lot of money up front in order to start your business. Once you’re ready to buy supplies, some items you’ll probably need are:

You may find it beneficial to order your supplies from a wholesaler.

Wholesalers are manufacturers who sell their manufactured products in bulk or retailers who purchase the product in bulk to sell in bulk to various retailers and customers (like yourself) at a fraction of the retail price.

You can buy nearly any item that you can think of in bulk. That includes your shipping boxes, cardstock, beads, etc. Check out AliExpress for wholesale supplies in every major category.

3. Design Your Bookmarks

When it’s time to design your bookmarks, I recommend taking a look at other bookmark shops to see what people are buying.

Don’t copy the designs of other artists, but analyze what’s working for them.

What colors are they using? Are they adding quotes to their bookmarks? Keep these things in mind when it’s time to design your bookmarks.

You can find inspiration on marketplaces like Etsy or Amazon. Check out these bookmarks.

If you don’t have experience with designing your own bookmarks, you can hire someone to create your designs for you. Fiverr is a good place to start if you’re looking for an affordable designer.

If you want to create your own designs, Canva has a lot of customizable templates that’ll make creating your bookmarks easy.

For the best possible quality, I recommend creating your designs in Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Spark. Adobe Spark has free bookmark templates to get you started.

4. Open Your Shop

Once you’re ready to start selling your bookmarks, you’ll need to decide what platform you’ll use for selling your products. I highly recommend opening a shop on Etsy.

Etsy is a handmade marketplace that’s perfect for selling your bookmarks. I like Etsy because it already has a built-in audience, making it easier to promote and sell your products.

It also makes it easier for people to find you via the Etsy search engine. When looking for bookmarks to buy, Etsy is one of the first places that people look too.

This is because Etsy is known for selling unique and high-quality handmade items.

5. Promote Your Bookmarks

Once you’ve got your shop open and products ready to sell, you’ll want to make sure you’re promoting your store.

Some places you can promote your bookmarks are on Instagram, Facebook Groups, Pinterest and most importantly your blog. As a small business owner, starting your blog can be an excellent way to promote your bookmarks.

You can write blog posts sharing your latest products, you can offer free bookmark printables in order to promote your paid items and more.

Your blog can also be a great way to get to know your customers and potential customers, as well as a way for them to get to know you.

When you have a closer relationship with your customer base, you’ll gain a better knowledge of how best to serve them.

I recommend starting a book blog and using this book to promote your bookmarks.

Once you’ve determined your target audience, designed your bookmarks, and opened your shop, you can enjoy the fruits of your labor by earning extra money selling your bookmarks.
