How to Start a Successful Crochet Business from Home

Updated January 13, 2021 · This post contains affiliate links. Read disclosure.

If you know how to crochet and want to make money with your craft, you should definitely start a crochet blog and business from home.

A question I see crocheters ask is "can you make money with crochet?" And the answer is yes you can!

There are a number of ways you can make money with crochet. However, the best way is by starting your own crochet blog and business.

As a crochet blogger, you can make money a number of ways. You can sell your patterns, earn ad revenue, make affiliate income, write sponsored content, or even sell your creations. But we'll get into this later.

First, let's go over the steps you need to take to start your crochet blog.

Getting Started

When starting your crochet blog, you first need to choose your domain name and hosting provider. I recommend Bluehost because they're affordable, reliable and have great customer service. These are all the things you need to have when starting your crochet blog.

UPDATE: Bluehost has a great deal! If you purchase your hosting through Bluehost for just $3.95 a month, they'll give you a free domain name.

Before I show you how to start your crochet blog, let's first decide what the name of your blog and business will be.

Choosing Your Crochet Business Name

A blog name is the name of your blog. For example, the name of my blog is Beautiful Dawn Designs.

A domain name is the name of your website. My domain name is beautifuldawndesigns.net.

For professional bloggers (those who are hoping to turn their blog into a profitable, money-making venture), you really want the blog name and the domain name to be the same thing.

When choosing your domain name, ask yourself these questions:

  1. Does it reflect my brand or personality? Can you see yourself building your brand around this name?
  2. Is it available on all of the popular social networking sites?
  3. Is it trademarked?
  4. Is it too long? You want your domain name to be something that is easy to remember.

Creating Your Crochet Blog

Now that we've gone over choosing your name, let's officially start creating your blog.

#1. Go to Bluehost and click on "WordPress >> WordPress Hosting."

#2. Click on "Choose Plan."

#3. Choose the "Basic" plan. You can always upgrade later, but the basic plan should be just fine.

#4. If you already own your domain name, you can connect it under "Use a domain you own." Otherwise, put your desired domain name in the "Create a new domain" box.

#5. Now it's time to fill out the order form. Fill this out with your details and submit the form.

  • Next to "Account Plan," choose "Basic 36 Month Price" to get the best deal!
  • You don't NEED any of the "Package Extras." However, if I were to recommend one of them, it would be the "Domain Privacy Protection." This will keep your personal information private (such as your name, address and telephone number).

How to Install WordPress

Once your hosting is set up, it's time to install WordPress. Thankfully, Bluehost makes this really easy.

#1. Log in to your hosting cPanel and allow Bluehost will guide you through the process of setting up WordPress.

#2. Fill in the name of your blog and your tagline. Switch on the option that says "Do you want a blog?"

#3. When it's time to select a theme, choose any theme that you like. It doesn't matter which one you choose, you can always change it later.

Make sure you check out my WordPress themes that I create with beginner bloggers in mind!

#4. After you hit the "Launch" button, Bluehost will install your WordPress blog.

How to Log In to Your Blog

#1. Log in to your blog by going to yourdomain.com/wp-admin/. The login screen looks like this:

Once logged in, you will have access to your WordPress dashboard area. Take a look around. This is where the magic happens!

How to Make Money with a Crochet Blog

Now that you've officially started your crochet blog, it's time for the fun part, making money. When you have a crochet blog, you can make money a number of ways.

Ad Revenue

You can earn ad revenue on your crochet blog by placing ads on your blog. When it comes to ad revenue, the more traffic you have, the better.

For new bloggers, I recommend placing ads on your blog using Google Adsense. Google Adsense is easy to join, and they don't require a minimum number of page views in order to join.

As your page view increase, I recommend applying to the Mediavine ad network. This is the network I use. Mediavine requires that you have at least 25,000 monthly sessions. Once approved. You will earn a lot more money through Mediavine.

Selling Your Patterns

You can make money by selling your patterns on Etsy.

Most crochet bloggers will post their pattern for free on their blog with ads, and offer an ad-free pdf pattern via Etsy.

Even though you're offering the pattern for free, you would be surprised by how many people want to pay for the ad-free pdf. This allows them to download and have easy access to the pattern.

I recommend using Google Docs to create your PDFs. Google Docs is free and easy to use.

Selling Your Own Products

As a crochet blogger, you can make money selling your handmade items on Etsy.

Etsy is a handmade marketplace that's perfect for selling your crochet items. I like Etsy because it already has a built-in audience, making it easier to promote and sell your products. It also makes it easier for people to find you via the Etsy search engine.

Some popular crochet items you can sell on Etsy are:

  • Hats and beanies
  • Ear warmers
  • Scarves
  • Fingerless gloves
  • Baby blankets
  • Cardigans
  • Amigurumi
  • Bags
  • and more

You can also dye and sell your own yarn, or create your own yarn subscription box.

By far, the best place to sell your subscription box is Cratejoy Cratejoy is a marketplace for subscription box entrepreneurs. You can list your subscription box in the marketplace with no monthly fee.

Start a YouTube Channel

You can earn money through Youtube by starting a crochet YouTube channel. On your channel, you can offer crochet tutorials, video patterns, and more. You will earn money from the ad revenue on your videos.

You can also use your channel to promote your blog or Etsy shop. This can be done by offering the written version of your video pattern on your blog or in your shop and providing the link to the pattern in your video description.

Some popular crochet YouTube channels are Bag-O-Day Crochet and Bella Coco.

Writing Sponsored Content

There are bloggers earning thousands of dollars per month by writing sponsored content.

When you write sponsored content, you'll be responsible for promoting a product to your audience.

In exchange for promoting the product, you will be paid by the company and often also given the opportunity to test free products.

I have a great blog post that teaches you how to make money with sponsored content.

Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing allows you (the affiliate) to receive a commission for promoting a merchant's products.

As an affiliate, you can earn money by promoting companies like Yarnspirations or LionBrand. Whenever someone clicks on your unique affiliate link and makes a purchase, you'll earn a small commission

The sky is the limit when it comes to making money with your crochet blog. Get creative, try new things, and have fun. With consistency and some patience, you can have a successful crochet blog.

As you can see, there are a number of ways to make money with crochet. Once you've gotten the swing of these, you'll see how fun it can be making money with your own at home crochet business.
