Having an organized home and life isn’t just for people that are naturally organized. Lazy people can be organized too!
Here are some tips to help you stay organized even when you don’t feel like it.
1. Start Small
Don’t try to organize your whole life in one day! Pick something easy, that doesn’t take much effort, and get it done first before you tackle a bigger projects.
You’re more likely to move on to the next thing if the first thing is completed successfully (and feels somewhat rewarding.) This will make even huge projects seem less daunting so start small.
2. Hold Yourself Accountable
Hold yourself accountable by telling a friend or family member what you’ll be organizing for the week. Ask them to check in on you after the week is over to see if you met your goals.
It’s easier to resist laziness when other people are watching you and expecting you get things done.
3. Write Things Down
If there’s something that you need to remember, write it down. From birthdays, to grocery lists, taking note of events or tasks is a simple step to helping keep your life organized.
It’s so much easier to keep your home organized if you have less stuff. Donate the things you don’t need to thrift stores or sell them at a garage sale. If it can’t be donated or sold, go ahead and throw it away.
5. Get Help From Your Partner or Kids
Who says you have to do everything yourself? If you have a spouse or kids that can help you, great! Your family can be there to pick up the slack when you find yourself needing help.
6. Reward Yourself for Getting Things Done
It’s important to reward yourself for getting things done. The reward doesn’t have to be huge, just something to look forward to at the end of the day.
Maybe it’s a bubble bath with your favorite beverage, time on the couch watching TV, playing with your pet, reading a book or going on social media… whatever makes you feel good.
Give yourself some extra “me” time after you’ve accomplished your tasks.
7. Organize As You Go
One of my favorite habits for staying organized is to organize as I go. That means instead of doing everything in one large chunk, I put things away as the mess is made.
Take the time to put things away when you’re finished with them instead of leaving them out to clean another day.
8. Set a Timer
I use a timer to help me stay focused and on task. Organizing a room can feel overwhelming. Setting a timer helps me work more efficiently and feel less overwhelmed. It’s nice knowing that once the timer beeps, I’m done for the day.
9. Find Motivation from Within
You are your own best cheerleader. Use that inner motivation to help you stick with your organization goals! Tell yourself positive affirmations while you work and then treat yourself so you can feel proud of what you’ve accomplished.
10. Have a Nightly Routine
Having a nightly routine helps me keep up with my organization goals. Taking some time out every evening to get things organized can do wonders for your mood in the morning. Waking up to a clean and organized home is a great way to start your day.
11. Take a Break
Sometimes you just need a break. Taking regular breaks from the craziness of life can be just what you need to get motivated again. Use this break time as an opportunity to just relax. This downtime will allow you to recharge so that when you’re ready to get back on track you’ll have more energy and determination.
