If you’ve found yourself spending a lot of time alone and not knowing how to fill your days, I’m sharing 7 things you can do to enjoy your own company.
But before I get into the post, I want to first distinguish the difference between being alone and being lonely.
Being alone doesn’t mean you have to be lonely. Many people take comfort in the time they get to spend by themselves.
Being alone doesn’t mean you don’t have friends or that you don’t like being around people. It can simply mean that you find joy in solitude.
Loneliness is an actual state of mind. Being lonely can cause someone to feel empty and unwanted.
How to Enjoy Your Own Company
If you’re looking for activities that you can do to take advantage of the time you have alone, here are some suggestions:
1. Take Up a Hobby
Investing your time in a hobby is a great way to keep boredom away, explore and learn new skills, and make time pass more quickly.
You don’t have to invest a lot of money in your hobby, either. Why not try making a new recipe today? Or get into gardening (or grow herbs in your windowsill) and reap the fruits of your labor!
Some of my favorite hobbies include crochet, drawing, reading, and more.
When starting a new hobby, leave behind any feelings of “I’m not smart enough, or good enough” and just let yourself play around. Write a poem, draw a picture with colored pencils. Play music on the piano or guitar.
Whatever hobby you’ve been thinking about picking up, give it a shot. It may become your new favorite thing to do.
2. Tackle a Home Improvement Project
If there’s a project you’ve been wanting to get to, then get to it! Don’t get overwhelmed because you don’t know where to start. There are so many amazing tutorials available on the internet for everything from painting your cabinets to installing light strips, and more.
3. Learn a New Language
I’m currently in the process of learning French using Rosetta Stone and I love it. If you’ve ever thought about learning a new language, why don’t you take the leap and do it now?
If you don’t want to pay for Rosetta Stone, I’ve also heard great things about the free language learning app Duolingo.
4. Watch a Movie In A New Language With Subtitles On
If you decide to learn a new language, it can be helpful and fun to watch movies in another language with subtitles on. There are other benefits to this too, such as:
- Discovering films from different cultures
- Increasing your reading speed
- Growing your vocabulary
- Improving your grammar
5. Take Up Photography
You don’t need a fancy camera in order to take pictures. If you have a phone with a camera, that’s good enough. Taking photos encourages your creativity and inspires you to get out of the house and explore.
There is so much beauty around us, that we often miss. Taking photographs opens your mind and reframes how you see things.
6. Read a Book
Read something for fun that’s completely unrelated to any issues that are going on in your life. Reading is a good way to get your mind off of things and just focus on the story.
If you prefer audiobooks, I use and love Audible. If you’re a new member, you can get your first audiobook free.
7. Get Out Into Nature
I love exploring nature and thankfully it’s really easy for me to do with where I live. I’ve always found being out in nature to be relaxing and therapeutic. Not only that but there is so much beauty out there to be seen.
If you don’t have any parks around you, even just going for a walk around your neighborhood is great. You can take your pet with you, listen to music or an audiobook, or just be alone with your thoughts.
I hope you found these ideas for spending time alone helpful. Who knows, maybe you’ll find a new favorite hobby. It’s never too late to start doing something different and explore your interests.
