Materials:

I’ve made quite a few of these coasters using whatever yarn I have on hand. Cotton yarn is preferred for coasters because it absorbs liquids and can stand up better to heat than acrylic yarn.

Size (approximate): 5.5″

Pattern Notes:

  • The chains do not count as a stitch.
  • For the first 3 rounds, we’ll be working in continuous rounds. I will let you know in the pattern when it’s time to join at the end of your rounds.
  • When you see 2 dc in the pattern, it means you will work 2 dc in the same stitch.
  • If you find that your coasters aren’t lying flat, you can steam them with a steam iron (do not place the iron directly on the coasters) or use a clothing steamer to help them lay flat. I personally don’t bother with this, as the coasters flatten pretty quickly with use.

Abbreviations (US):

ch – chain
st(s) – stitch(es)
sl st – slip stitch
sc – single crochet
hdc – half double crochet
dc – double crochet
inc – increase (work 2 stitches in the same stitch)

To begin Ch 2 using your first color

Round 1: Work 8 hdc into the 2nd chain from the hook. (8 sts)

Remember to place your stitch marker in the 1st stitch of each round. This will help you keep track of when you’re starting a new round.

Round 2: Inc in each stitch around. (16 sts)

Round 3: *Inc, hdc in next st.* Repeat from * to * around. Sl st to the 1st stitch of the next round, fasten off the yarn and weave in the tail. (24 sts)

Round 4: Using your second color, attach the yarn, ch 1 and work 1 sc in the same st. Work 1 sc in each st around. Sl st to the 1st st of the next round. (24 sts)

Note: At the beginning of rounds 5-7, the first sc stitch will go in the stitch after the chain 1 (see image below).
