Granny Shawl Free Crochet Pattern (Written For Beginners)

When I set out to design the Granny Shawl, I wanted to make something that every crocheter could feel confident making. Crocheting a triangle shawl can seem a little tricky at first, so I decided to write this pattern a bit differently than my usual ones. My goal was to make the pattern as easy to understand as possible.

You can find the free pattern below, or you can purchase the ad-free printable PDF from my shop.

Throughout the pattern, you’ll find a few helpful notes and photos to guide you through the making of your shawl. This granny shawl pattern is designed to help you succeed and enjoy the process from start to finish.

Row 1: Ch 4 and join to 1st ch with a sl st to form a ring. Ch 4 (counts as a dc throughout pattern).

Work 3 dc in the ring. Ch 2 and work 3 more dc in the ring (The space you just created here is the “peak” of the triangle shawl. Place a stitch marker here to help you remember that this is the peak space.), ch 1 and work 1 more dc in the ring.

Row 3: Ch 4 and turn. Work 3 dc in the 1st ch 1 space. *Ch 1 and work 3 dc in the next ch 1 space.* (The ch 1 space is the space between the clusters. The number of ch 1 spaces will increase as the size of shawl increases.) Repeat from * to *, until you reach the peak space. When you reach the peak space, work 3 dc in the peak space, ch 2 and work 3 more dc in the peak space.

*Ch 1 and work 3 dc in the next ch 1 space.* Repeat from * to *, until you reach the final ch 1 space where you will work 3 dc in the space, ch 1, and work 1 more dc in the same space.

Repeat Row 3 until you have a total of 42 rows or until the shawl reaches your desired size.
