If you’re anything like me, a good grab and go bag is basically an essential. This Easy Market Bag is my favorite kind of project because it’s cute, practical, and actually gets used.

I especially love this bag in the summer and early fall when market days are in full swing. It’s the perfect bag for fresh flowers, a loaf of bread, and so much more.
Easy Market Bag Yarn Recommendation
For the best results, I highly recommend using cotton yarn for this bag. Cotton is strong, durable, and holds up beautifully to frequent use, plus it’s easy to wash when your bag comes home sandy from the beach or a little dusty from carrying produce.
Cotton also tends to stretch less than acrylic, so your bag will do a better job of keeping its shape. Just keep in mind that any crochet bag will stretch over time, especially with heavier items, so if you want it to stay true to its shape long term, adding a simple fabric lining makes a big difference.

Materials:
- 3 Lily Sugar ‘N Cream 120yds cotton yarn
- US size H 5.0 mm crochet hook
- Stitch marker
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
Size (approximate): 13” tall (not including strap) and 12.5” wide
Pattern Notes:
- For part of the pattern, we’ll be working in continuous rounds. Do not join at the end of your rounds until mentioned specifically.
- The ch 3 counts as a stitch throughout the pattern.
- Place a stitch marker in the 1st stitch of each round. This will help you keep track of when you’re starting a new round.
- If you don’t like the look of the traditional ch 3, it can be replaced with a standing double crochet, which better mimics the appearance of a standard double crochet. When the pattern states to “ch 4”, you will work a standing double crochet, then ch 1, and continue the pattern as written.
- To adjust the size of your bag, work additional or fewer rounds (increasing stitches accordingly) until the bottom of the bag reaches your desired size (this will be the overall width of the bag). This pattern requires an odd number of stitches, so make sure the final round has an odd number of stitches. You can add or remove a stitch if needed. Once you’re happy with the size of the bottom, continue on to the body of the bag.

inc – increase (work 2 stitches in the same stitch)

hdc – half double crochet
dc – double crochet

Easy Market Bag Pattern
Bottom of bag
To begin Ch 2
Round 1: Work 7 hdc in the 2nd ch from the hook. (7 sts)
Round 2: Inc in each st around. (14 sts)
Round 3: *Inc, hdc in next st.* Repeat from * to * around. (21 sts)
Round 4: *Inc, hdc in next 2 sts.* Repeat from * to * around. (28 sts)
Round 5: *Inc, hdc in next 3 sts.* Repeat from * to * around. (35 sts)
Round 6: *Inc, hdc in next 4 sts.* Repeat from * to * around. (42 sts)
Round 7: *Inc, hdc in next 5 sts.* Repeat from * to * around. (49 sts)
Round 8: *Inc, hdc in next 6 sts.* Repeat from * to * around. (56 sts)
Round 9: *Inc, hdc in next 7 sts.* Repeat from * to * around. (63 sts)
Round 10: *Inc, hdc in next 8 sts.* Repeat from * to * around. (70 sts)

Body of bag
Round 14-16: Ch 3 (counts as dc now and throughout pattern), dc in next st and in each st around. Sl st to top of ch 3 to join. (91 sts)
Round 17: Ch 4, sk next st, dc in next st, *ch 1, sk next st, dc in next st.* Repeat from * to * around. Sl st to top of ch 4 to join. (91 sts)
Round 18-20: Ch 3 (counts as dc now and throughout pattern), dc in next st and in each st around. Sl st to top of ch 3 to join. (91 sts)
Repeat rounds 17-20 until you have completed a total of 27 rounds. You can do more or less rounds for a taller or shorter bag. Just be sure to finish with 2 rounds of dc.
Round 28: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), hdc in same st and in each st around. Do not join at end of round.
For remaining rounds crochet in a continuous round and do not join at the end of the round.
Rounds 29-30: Hdc in each st around.
Do not fasten off yarn.
Bag strap
Row 1: With yarn still attached, ch 1 (does not count as st) hdc in same st, work 1 sc in next 5 sts. Ch 1 and turn. (6 sts)
Row 2: Work 1 hdc in each st across. Ch 1 and turn. (6 sts)
Repeat row 2 until your strap is your desired length. My strap is approximately 29.5” and 76 rows.
Attach the strap
Fasten off the yarn leaving a long tail for sewing, bring the strap over to the opposite side of the bag and use a tapestry needle to whip stitch the strap to the bag. Whip stitch back and forth a couple of times to make sure your strap is extra secure.
