Hallelujah Prayer Shawl Crochet Pattern

Here at last is a shawl that I’ve been working on and I’m really happy to share it with you. The Hallelujah Prayer Shawl has been on my heart for a while, and it feels good to finally put it out into the world.

If you’re new to prayer shawls, they’re exactly what they sound like. A prayer shawl is a handmade wrap created with intention, prayer, or quiet reflection stitched into every row. They’re often given to someone going through a hard season, celebrating a milestone, or simply needing a reminder that they are loved and covered in prayer.

This shawl was designed to be soothing to make and meaningful to give. It’s thoughtful, personal, and just feels different than something picked up off a shelf.

I hope this pattern blesses your hands as you make it and warms the shoulders of whoever ends up wearing it.

Materials:

Size (approximate): 14.5” x 70”

Gauge (4in x 4in): Approximately 8 dc sts and 7 rows

Size Adjustment: The pattern has a chain multiple of 4 plus 1 stitch + 2 for the foundation chain. That means you will chain in multiples of 4, add 1 additional chain to that, then add 2 additional chains to that.

For example, if you were to chain 20 (multiple of 4), add 1 to that for a total of 21, then add 2 (for the foundation chain) to that for a total of 23 chains. To adjust the size of your shawl, start with a longer or shorter chain until it’s the wingspan you want, then follow the pattern as written.

Pattern Notes:

  • The chain 3 counts as a dc stitch.
  • The yarn can be substituted with your preferred yarn and hook size.
  • If you have trouble identifying the first or last stitch of the row, use stitch markers to help you keep track.

Abbreviations (US):

ch – chain
st(s) – stitch(es)
dc – double crochet
sp – space
sk – skip
( ) – parenthesis: stitches are all worked in one stitch or space
